The promise of yoga is not freedom, but rather a beautiful life that is well lived. And yet all too often, we think aging equates to a gradual increase in suffering and a decrease in quality of living. Yoga philosophy and asana are strategies of pushing back against the arrow of time and aging. We can age with grace, integrity and the wisdom to not ignore the limitations that arise with embodiment. We can also learn to live more skillfully within these limitations. In this workshop we will learn about the negative tendencies that the body is exposed to through our lifespans, and explore the importance of backbends as a strategy to recapture and maintain a vibrant body throughout our lives. We will learn routines and simple techniques that help to ensure a healthy spine and a healthy life.

PREPARING THE BODY FOR MOVEMENT
The vast majority of musculo-skeletal problems arise from sub-optimal patterns of movement. Loading the knees instead of the hips for example, or lacking the range of motion in one joint so that we have to compensate by using other muscles and joints not designed for that purpose. The body is designed to be able to buffer enormous stresses and forces it will be exposed to through the movements of life and sports. But given our sedentary lifestyles oftentimes our bodies need to be "prepped" for movement and become resilient to endure the healthy forces and stresses it will encounter through life. In the three remaining sessions of the workshop we will:
• introduce the concept of prehabilitation, its purpose and implementation into a movement practice
• lay out the biomechanics and movement possibilities for the spine, shoulders, hips, knees and wrists
• learn tools and protocols for "prehabbing" the body so that it is resilient and resistant to injury
• insure that the very movement disciplines that we do (such as yoga, running, gym training etc...) will actually help us and not ending up hurting us.
This workshop is intended to educate you, empower you and stimulate further interest into how to maintain and take care of your body. For all levels of practitioners.
